Boca Chica Fried Fish
Submitted by dr1guide on August 1, 2009 – 12:33 pm4 Comments

Fried-Fish-1Boca Chica is famous for its fried fish. According to fish vendor Rosanna Bautista, it’s the love they add to the recipe that separates fried fish in Boca Chica from that which is served anywhere else on the island. Bautista owns a small stall on the western section of Santo Domingo’s closest beach.

Just as in all the stalls, Bautista has her fish on display and ready to go, seasoned with a mix of salt, garlic and oregano. Once a client asks for a specific fish, she coats it with flour and fries the fish twice so it “takes up a good flavor” as she explains.

Most of the fish sold in Boca Chica is either Loro (Parrot Fish), Mero (Grouper) or Chillo (Red Snapper). According to Bautista, the price of the fish has nothing to do with the type but rather the size. Prices range from RD$150 to RD$390.

Remember that fried fish never arrives on your plate alone. Every fish comes as a servicio or combo that is accompanied by tostones (fried plantains) and aguacate (avocado). Patrons can also add on batata frita (fried sweet potato), bollito de yuca (cheese filled cassava), longaniza (pork sausage) or yaniqueque (Johnny cake).

The above story of Ms. Rosanna Bautista’s fish business sounds delicious. How would I specifically locate her great stand? Thank you.

  • dr1guide says:

Rosanna’s stand is located on the far western section of Boca Chica beach. All of the stands offer the same options but if you would like to visit Rosanna, her stand can be found towards the middle just in front of the tables where patrons can eat. If you have trouble finding her, just ask. Enjoy!

We will be visiting the dr. at Christmas and will be staying at the Coral Costa Caribe. How far away is this restaurnant? Walk or Cab?
    Approximate cost?

  • dr1guide says:

This article highlights fish stalls in Boca Chica. These are really not restaurants. From your hotel in Coral Costa Caribe you will have to take a cab about 15 min to Boca Chica. Approximate cost would be about RD$360 or US$10.
