Gourmet Dominican Coffee at West Indies

West Indies Cafe logoWest Indies Coffee is one of the Zona Colonial’s small gems and if you don’t look twice, you might pass right by. Located on Calle Las Mercedes between Arzobispo Meriño and Isabel La Católica, the small cafe’s inviting atmosphere offers a relaxing break from the hussle of the Zona’s busy streets.

Although the storefront is less than a year old, owner Jose Antonio Ureña’s real business has been exporting Dominican coffee for the past 11 years. Ureña collects the coffee he exports from small coffee producing co-ops in the highest altitudes of the Dominican Republic. The coffee is then packaged under the brand West Indies Coffee. Ureña seperates several of his highest quality bags of coffee for export to offer to his customers in the Zona Colonial.

“This is something we do more out of passion and less out of business,” says Ureña. “We want people to try the good quality coffee that the Dominican Republic has to offer.”

Coffee served at West Indies Cafe is roasted on site, sending out an aroma that covers the entire block; something his neighbors complained about at first, explains Ureña. Nowadays, they line up at the door to get their share of that morning’s brew.

Customers at West Indies Coffee can enjoy an expresso, cappuccino, latte or a small pastry while admiring some of the intriguing photos of coffee production in the Dominican countryside. Of the coffee growing Caribbean islands, the Dominican Republic owns the highest altitudes, offering an ideal environment for coffee production between 4,000 to 5,000 feet. Coffee sipped at West Indies comes directly from these unique microclimates, bringing with it a quality of coffee you would be hard pressed to find.

“If you just wanna go have a cup of coffee because you want to wake up in the morning you can have that anywhere,” says Ureña. “This is the uncommercialized side of Dominican coffee, the gourmet side not too many people know about.”

West Indies Cafe is open daily from 7am-6pm. 809.685.1100
